Shine is a 2020 young adult romance novel by K-pop idol Jessica Jung, published by Simon & Schuster.
Shine was released on the 29th of September 2020.

Shine became an instant hit, becoming a New York Times Bestseller, debuting at No.5 on the Young Adult Hardcover List.
Jessica Jung is a former member of the South Korean girl group girls' generation, and was inspired to write the book based on her experiences as a K-pop trainee and idol, having spent 13+ years working in the industry.
The novels sequel Bright is set to be released September/October time in 2021.

All's fair in love & K-pop...

What would you sacrifice for a chance to live your dream?

For 17-year-old Korean-American Rachel Kim, the answer is: everything.
The rules at DB Entertainment - Seoul's largest and most successful K-pop label - are simple. Train 24/7. Be perfect. Don't date. Easy, right? But then Rachel gets the chance to duet with DB golden boy Jason Lee. And he's exactly the kind of distraction Rachel can't afford to have...

Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Korea's most famous girl group, Girls' Generation, takes us inside the twisted, technicolor world of K-pop - where the stakes are high, and the cost f success even higher.

This is what it takes to Shine!

I've been a fan of Jessica Jung for pretty much half of her career in the idol industry, having been a Girls' Generation fan for the past 8 years, so when I heard she was dipping her toes into writing a book, I knew I had to get my hands on it and give it a read.
I saw many mixed reviews for this book, with some loving it and some saying she was using her fame as a former Girls' Generation member to talk about the girl group, but the way I saw it, was while she was writing about the K-pop world, she was writing about what she knows and has personally seen and possibly witnessed and gone through herself. I personally don't think any of the characters are meant to be fictional counterparts of her former members, but you can some of of the characters are moulded from her own personal life, for example our main character is Korean-American which many people know Jessica is, our main character also has a younger sister, which we know Jessica has a younger sister, that also entered the K-pop world. I will be honest and at times when I saw similar names, I could see why people were saying it was about her past and she was using a fictional novel to tell her story, but I decided not to read too much into it and read it for what it was a romance novel about the K-pop world.
I absolutely loved Shine, I thought it was well written, and had me hooked from the very first chapter, it took turns that I really wasn't expecting and I think it showcased how hard it actually is for trainees, trying to debut and working 24/7 in all aspects of their training.
I personally felt all the emotions that Rachel Kim was feeling, and often found myself holding my breath, thinking is this really happening, what will happen now.
I'm glad we're getting a second book and I can't wait to see how Rachel's career goes, as well as how she grows and overcomes her past trauma's from within DB Entertainment, I'm curious to find out how her relationship with main bitch Mina changes and if we see more from Jason Lee and if he tries to right his wrongs.

I've seen many wonder if Jessica has indeed written this book herself or if she's used a ghostwriter, as a fan of Jessica I'm hoping it's the former, and I hope her success continues with the 2nd book, there's also been articles that Shine will be made into a movie too, so I'm excited and looking forward to seeing the book on the big screen and hope they don't change too much like they normally do with films adapted from a book.

Girls Generation: Into The New World

Hello

It's been a while since I had a post about my ultimate bias group Girls Generation, to be more precise it's been over a year since we had a Girls Generation post. This time we're heading back to 2007 and the release of their debut single album "Into The New World".

In July 2007, Girls Generation had their first stage performance on Mnet's School of Rock, then on the 3rd of August 2007, the M/V for 다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World) was released along with the digital release of the single album, just three days later, on the 6th of August 2007, the physical copy of the album was released.
Owned by SM Entertainment
On the 5th of August 20017, Girls Generation officially made their debut on music show Inkigayo.
The physical edition of the single album debuted at No.5 on the chart for August 2007, compiled by MIAK, selling 10,823 copies in it's first month of release. It was the 41st best-selling Cd release of 2007 in South Korea, selling 22,818 physical copies in total. In 2010, the single peaked at No.2 on the Gaon Albums Chart for the chart issue dated April 18th-24th, based on physical sales. It became the 9th best-selling release of April 2010 in South Korea.
In 2016, Into the New World experienced a resurgence, when Ewha Women's University students sang it during part of their peaceful protest against the university whilst facing 1600 police officers. Girls Generation member Tiffany said that, "As SNSD, it was a proud moment. Right now is the generation for feminists, and it's an era where messages of women empowering other women are important. I feel like our song played that role, so my heart was happy". Member Yuri said, "I saw the video several times, and I even cried because my heart was overcome with emotion. It was a moment when I felt a huge sense of pride as a singer. It was a message that I wanted to deliver through my work, and the inspiration that we wanted to deliver through music and performance was being realised, so it was unlike anything else. At the time when we debuted, I didn't fully understand the lyrics so I might have been imitating it with bright eyes. But as time passes and I listen to the song, the lyrics touch me even more".
During the 2016-17 South Korean protests, the song was sung widely in public squares, leading to it becoming the 'morning dew' of the young generation and it's position as No.1 on Melon's real-time chart almost 10 years after it's release.

Into the New World won Girls Generation their 1st music show trophy on M Countdown.

Into the New World peaked at No.5 on the MIAK Albums Chart.
Korean Sales:
41,234+
*YouTube views correct at time of writing post*
The M/V for 다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World) has gained 30,580,947 million views and the views continue to increase on a daily basis.

Into the New World is set out in a hardback case, with the photo book introducing the members and giving a little snippet of a diary entry from each of the girls.

Track List:
다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World)
Beginning
Perfect For You (소원)
다시 만난 세계 (Into the New World) Inst.

Into the New World for me will always be a debut release that gives me chills and I hope that we will one day see it performed and sung they way it was released. Since Jessica's departure it's always been sung as a ballad, so it will be nice to see them perform it again to take us back to their debut days. Since I first heard them, I've always been a fan of Beginning and Perfect For You, which the latter made an appearance on their first full length album, with the new title of Honey. I love how colourful the whole album is and I think the layout is perfect for a debut release.

Looking back on these performances, makes me realise how much I miss seeing Girls Generation perform, but it also makes me realise how much they've changed and grown as artists. I can only keep hoping that one day Girls Generation make a comeback as a whole group, but for now I'll just be extremely excited that Tiffany is about to release her debut ENGLISH mini album this week.

Have you been a SONE since debut?
Were you a fan of their debut single and single album?

I love this album as a whole, it's really pretty and a gorgeous way to celebrate Jessica's 10 years as a singer, I admit I got a little teary seeing pictures of her during her days as a member of Girls Generation, it's just sad that they're were no group shots of her with the girls. I think there would have been 2 factors of why pictures of her with Girls Generation were not used, SM Entertainment probably told her on leaving the company that she didn't own or have a right to use the pictures and she probably knew that if she had used the pictures she would have probably received hate for using them saying she was trying to get attention from using them. She already received hate from releasing her album, I saw comments asking why she couldn't wait a week or so till after Girls Generation had made their comeback, and was trying to steal their thunder. Why should she have to delay or wait to celebrate that she was also celebrating her 10 year anniversary. I would have been more surprised and heartbroken as a SONE if she hadn't included pictures from her days as a member of Girls Generation. I love all the pictures within the photo book, she looks flawless in every picture, there are many different outfit changes, which shows me another of Jessica's loves is always present within her albums, and that's fashion. I love all the tracks on the album, they all have a different feel and vibe to them even though most of them are slow songs. I think Jessica shines more with her voice with slower tracks but I do love it when she does faster songs, I think My Decade is the perfect chill out album to sit and listen to while reminiscing over Jessica's past 10 years as well as thinking about your own memories, it really is a celebration album, Saturday Night makes me want to get up and dance along while Love U leaves me feeling emotional and happy that I have Jessica's voice in my life, her voice as been a part of my music interests for the past 5 years (nearly 6).

Sadly it's been a year now since we've had an album release from Jessica, I can only hope that she returns now with a new release and possibly an English release. I was kind of gutted that she didn't release and English version release of my Decade like she did with her first 2 albums. For now we have come to the end of Jessica's solo discography, but fingers crossed she'll be back soon.

Did you like the My Decade concept?
What is your favourite track from the album?
