Happiness was Park Hyung Sik's first acting project after completing his military service in January 2021.
Like most of the drama's I've watched, this drama has some catchy tracks.
Happiness takes place in the near future, where the release of a failed treatment drug "Next" has caused a worldwide pandemic known as the Lytra Virus, aka "mad person disease". Those infected by Lytra experience short bouts of insanity and bloodlust, before completely regressing into a zombie-like state.
The South Korean military and police forces try to contain the spread of Lytra and Next through extensive investigation and authoritive quarantine measures, while civil rights groups protest against them, believing the infected are still capable of normal human interaction.
Yoon Sae Beom is a special agent with quick wits and reflexes and another special quality. She earns the opportunity to move into a new apartment set aside for civil servants in a coveted apartment complex by pretending to marry high school friend Jung Yi Hyun.
Yi Hyun is a detective investigating the spread of a mysterious disease. They are trapped inside in their apartment building when Han Tae Seok, head of the task force to control the spread of the disease, orders the complex to be sealed off from the rest of the city.
Quarantine and disease reveal a social caste system, bringing out the best and worst of the apartment residents.
This is the type of drama I really like. I enjoy the typical romance drama's, but I absolutely love thriller and "zombie" drama's.
I love that with this drama, you can't predict what's going to happen, it keeps you on edge, I found it difficult to stop watching with this drama. When each episode came to an end, I wanted to continue onto the next.
The cast were amazing and they really brought life to the drama and their characters.
I loved Han Hyo Joo as Yoon Sae Bom. This was my first drama of hers and I really enjoyed her acting. I really liked her character, she was a strong, independent woman and will help anyone that needs it. I loved that she refused to sit and wait for everything to go back to normal and fought to get answers. She also takes her job seriously.
I loved Park Hyung Sik as Jung Yi Hyun. His character at times brings some comedic relief, but at most he's a serious character, and like Yoon Sae Bom, he takes his job seriously and will fight for and protect those in need. He has a close bond with Sae Bom as they were high school friends, but unbeknownst to her, he harbours feelings for her too, which seem to be one-sided.
I thought Jo Woo Jin did amazing as Han Tae Seok. He's part of the government and is tasked in finding a way to treat and cure this "zombie" disease. He's cold and calculating and will do anything to get the answers he wants and needs, no matter who he has to sacrifice. As we get to know more about him you understand the reasons behind his mindset.
I really liked Lee Jun Hyeok as Kim Jung Guk. I thought he did a really good job bringing his role to life. I love his friendship with Yi Hyun, they seem to have a close bond and a relationship that goes past just being work colleagues. His actions in the series can often be seen as something relatable as his partner is on her own at home, while he is in lockdown, so you can understand some of the things he does because he wants to be out their protecting her and making sure she is safe.
I have to say that BEK Hyun Jin was annoying and frustrating as Oh Joo Hyung, but that's because he played his role so well. He thinks because he has money, he has the power to do whatever he wants and get away with it, which we see when people question where his wife is.
I thought Moon Ye Won was really good as Woo Sang Hee. I would say she's the typical gold digger character. She goes where ever the money is and doesn't care who she has to be with to get what she believes she deserves.
I really liked Park Hee Von as Na Hyun Kyung. She was one of my favourites, even thought we didn't get a lot of screen time with her. I loved her relationship with her brother, you could tell that they were incredibly close.
I think Park Hyung Soo was good as Kook Hae Seong, he's the typical bad lawyer that will do anything to get what he wants and believes because of his job as a lawyer that people will respect him and his decisions. His wife on the other hand question his actions an answers. I think he's easy manipulated as we see when he starts being involve with Woo Sang Hee.
I really liked Na Chul as Na Su Min. He has a strong bond with his sister Na Hyun Kyung, even when things seem to be going south for them, they still look out for each other.
I liked Lee Joo Seung as Andrew, he's a mysterious character that keeps his face hidden and works with the cleaners. We're definitely taken on a ride with this character.
While we didn't see much of him, I liked Han Joon Woo as Kim Se Hoon. He's a bit OCD and a germaphobe so mainly keeps to himself but he seems to make a connection with Sae Bom and opens up a little to her and lets him in his safe space.
I hated the character BJ Kim Dong Hyun, but that just means Kang Han Saem did a great job as him. He's a selfish character and treats is parents badly. All he seems to care about are views and money, and he doesn't seem to care how he gets it.
I think Bae Hae Sun did a good job as Oh Yeon Ok. She's respected by the tenants that live in the building she does and she holds her place in that building to high esteem and seems to think those that don't have money, or fully one their apartments are beneath her.
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Lee Kyu Hyung as Lee Seung Young, I've watched him in a few roles and have always liked his characters. I was keeping my fingers crossed for his character and hoping he would survive this show.
I highly recommend this drama, it's such a binge worthy series and it's full of suspense and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
For me it definitely ended with good closure, I wasn't left with any questions.
I think if you're a fan of thrillers as well as apocalyptic "zombie" stuff then, I think you'd like this take on that genre.
